It actually used to be common practice to hammer without stating intent until not claiming certain roles became a viable strategy. What’s my motivation for putting myself out there and stating intent? Why don’t I just decide to play the too scummy to be scum card and hammer to end discussion?

Eh I’ve never put much faith into VCA. It can be a useful tool, but it is not the be-all-end-all and context is extremely important if you are going to use it. Even if you expect to see patterns over the course of the game, context is still important. I think a lot of people who use VCA luck themselves into conclusions that happen to be correct or are correct more often than not or just ignore the times it doesn’t work while remembering the times it does.
