Germany is a country divided. The Soviets fear that a pastoral Germany will never be able to pay war reparations, and American businessmen have financial interest in the rebuilding of Germany. Under the Potsdam treaty, Germany and Berlin itself have been split between the victorious powers. The Marshall Plan outlines plans for the reconstruction of Germany, but the Soviet Union instead takes entire factories as reparation.

What will the future hold?

A number of Soviet occupied countries in Eastern Europe have new 'peoples republic' governments installed, with strong ties to the Soviet Union. The western powers consider this in violation of agreements made at the Yalta conference. It becomes increasingly clear that the Soviet Union has no intention of allowing countries such as Yugoslavia to self govern.

The combined areas of Germany under the governance of the western powers have unified as West Germany. In an attempt to seize control of West Berlin, the Soviet Union has prevented all land access to the city. The western powers have responded by creating an airlift that has kept Berlin fed, watered, and supplied. Although this Berlin Blockade has failed, the divide between East and West is furthering.

An iron curtain has descended across the European continent, from Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe….All these famous cities and the populations around them lie in…the Soviet sphere, and all are subject, in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and, in some cases, increasing measure of control from Moscow. Communication between East and West is failing and the world, for the moment, has been divided into two.

Many years have passed. The two superpowers have skirmished politically and through several proxy wars in countries such as Korea and Vietnam. Berlin remains split in half by the massive Berlin Wall. In the Soviet bloc, many massive famines occur and Stalin commits many awful purges of the intelligentsia. In the west, McCarthyism persecutes suspected communists and many democratically elected communist parties are violently overthrown by US-Friendly autocrats.

People around the world practice drills for nuclear war and build bunkers in their backyards in the hope of waiting out a nuclear winter. It feels like only a matter of time before one of the two superpowers launches a pre-emptive strike, with Able Archer 83 being seen as one and nearly provoking a Soviet first strike. Many near misses with the potential for a nuclear apocalypse go by, most notably when Vasily Arkhipov overrode his captain before a 10-kiloton nuclear payload was fired at the American fleet.

The space race goes by as the two superpowers compete first to pass through the boundaries of our atmosphere, then land a man on the moon. The United States wins a peaceful victory, taking a small step for man but a giant leap for mankind. In 1985, Gorbachev is elected Communist Party General Secretary. He pushes for reform, and a major breakthrough is made when the INF is signed, marking the first step towards disarmament.

In a speech in West Berlin, then-President Ronald Reagan asked that Gorbachev, if he sought peace with the west and liberalization, to tear down the Berlin Wall, symbol of the curtain dividing the two spheres of the world. In November 1989, the wall finally falls, and the iron curtain dividing the world ends.
