You and your coworkers look around the room uneasily. innocentvillager stands up, kicking their chair back from the table and flinging a coffee mug at the wall in fury. “I can’t believe you’re doing this to me! You’ll regret this, you bastards!” They foam and fume for a few minutes as you and your coworkers stare fixedly at the conference table, then storm out of the office, overturning chairs and desks and smashing a printer as they go.

“Should we call security?” somebody asks, and you do.

Not a moment too soon, either. Security picks innocentvillager up at the elevator and escorts them to their car, and catches a glimpse of a gun and several folders of pilfered company records in the backseat.

Wednesday Morning.

You arrive at the office on Wednesday morning with a spring in your step. With innocentvillager in the hands of the authorities, it feels like you might be on your way to making this merger work. For the first time in a few days, you enter the office with a hint of optimism.

But you quickly realize something is amiss. Mc esther isn’t here, and she’s usually one of the first ones in the building. You make your way to the conference room. She’s not there, either. By 9 AM, everybody has arrived … except Esther. Nobody feels good about starting the discussion without her, so you agree to wait. Five minutes pass, then ten, then twenty, and then, the phone rings.

It’s Esther. She’s hard to hear over the sound of wind and passing cars, but you can’t mistake her words.

“I’m out.”

“What? Esther, what happened? Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m okay. Barely. Listen.” Her voice breaks a little and she has to pause before she continues. “I’m on the side of the highway right now. I was only a few minutes from my house when … my car just … I couldn’t stop. I panicked, and I clipped a Subaru, and we both went into the ditch. My car’s a total write-off.”

“Jesus, are you –”

“Just let me finish,” she says. “I told the officer what happened, and they checked my vehicle. Somebody cut my brake lines.”

The room goes deathly silent.

“I think whoever was working with IV is panicking. They’re dangerous. I could’ve been killed. So, I’m out. No job is worth this.”

She hesitates for just a moment, the sound of passing cars roaring through the speaker.

“And if you have any sense, the rest of you will get out, too.”

I feel like the plan may have been vote IV early to make me/you think Dunn/IV impossible, which then means we prefer voting Esther, so then dunn looks good we look bad and then badaboom badabing we lose.
