What is it? Can it be changed, and how?

"Townsperson" -> "Goon" -> "Mafia Scum" are default titles based on the user's game posts(which you can see by clicking on your profile).

Custom titles are nominated in this thread, approved by Thok, and implemented by Jeep.

actually, Townsperson comes before Goon, but that's pretty much right.
But yes, it can be changed, but you have to have been here for a bit and have enough game posts.
Then, once you have even more, if people think of a creative custom title for you, you can be given that.

For emphasis I would like to add that you shouldn't be trying to get a title on purpose, since titles usually generate from memes or posts ripped out of context and are given to you, you shouldn't self nominate or ask 'give me a title'.

Thats not how titles happen.

Titles happen as a recognition that you're a part of this community thats here to stay. You earn a title by being memorable. By doing something thats interesting, unique, and/or funny. memes are stupid, and actually the opposite to a good title.

Also, jeep typically only updates titles 1-2 times a year, although the impending upgrade to 3.0 may change that.

Why can't they be edited by the user like on other forums?

The entire point of the titles on this site is that they cannot be edited at will, especially by the user.
