I just joined my university's LoL club, and we're gonna play in some Go4LoL's and stuff. Next semester we'll likely get involved in IvyLoL. Looks like a lot of fun. I've always wanted to get involved in competitive LoL, and here's my chance. For those of you who have been on teams in the past, do you have any suggestions or useful info for me?

the only problem I've had with playing on a team is with timezones
but this is a local thing i assume

so

play with your team
a lot

get to know your teammates
a lot

edit: and also don't play like you do in yoloqueue
actually talk and work with teammates

For playing on a team:

Communicate effectively what everyone can play, and work on building a champion pool that fits with your team's style. it's pointless to be good at Jayce if your team never runs poke, for instance.

nope, "your team's style" is about 80% defined by (initial) champion pool, not vice versa

Yes.

But then you learn more champions. Those should be learned to fill holes, either personal or team-wide (ie, entire team likes running champs for an aoe-engage comp except your toplaners are Jayce, Nidalee, Shen, and Irelia, or your team decides that they want to be able to run aoe and not get banned out, so despite you playing Vlad and Kennen, they also want you to learn Wukong)

you pick players for a team based on their playstyles meshing with yours, you dont grab people who dont play anything that fits with your general strategy and then complain that they dont know stuff that fits with it (also known as "don't bring a bow and arrow to the NRA meeting")

otherwise you arent playing to your players' strengths (which is bad)

Pretty excited about buying Yorick, I think his style fits mine
And I guess playing in a competitive team goes like:
1. Find everyone's favourite champs
2. Find champs that are similar and fit well with the others
3. Buy wards
4. Wreck havoc

nope, its both simpler and more complex than that

the main thing people dont realize is that playing the game isnt the difficult part, its the interpersonal shit thats hard

the secondary thing that people dont realize is that teamplay is about objectives and a lot of really strong solo queue methods of play are strictly weaker in a 5s game (and vice-versa)

I have found in the few scrims we've played that a lot of stupid shit that works in solo queue dosen't work in 5's. Mainly, people are more likely to ward for each other, thus forcing the jungler into more creative usd of his time.

I feel you Deathnote. This last weekend to now has been rough on me.

Just cant get a win in. When I do well, my team feeds or RQs. Otherwise Im making shit mechanical errors or getting counter picked.

Think Im about to turn it around. Had a sexy skarner game duoing with my friend.

I swear skarner is secret op.

I need someone to play with me so I can improve. The only critiques I ever get are from shit players who just qq about everything.

I understand the counter pick feeling. If I am first pick, then I can get mid or a spot I want, but I get counter picked. If I am last pick, I am usually stuck supporting.

Anyone else having problems with teams not communicating during champion select?

nope. You learn to like supporting. Or you learn to deal with matchups that aren't favorable/pick champs that have no truely terrible matchups (and there are a lot of those)
Surrender, imagine and of course wear something nice.

if i'm remembering correctly your experience comes from left 4 dead or some sort of shooter thing, correct?

there is a massive difference between the two with too many nuances to explain; the MOBA environment in general is one that leads to more general friction (hence the legendarily toxic communities) between people on the same team

the majority of this stems from the fact that single mistakes cost games, and that whether or not an action is correct is usually not black-and-white (there's a lot less room for debate in "did you shoot the thing" than "should i have warded that", for example)

beyond that, experiences may vary

this will probably be my last post on this matter because i swore off posting in this thread for the most part ages ago because i hate plain-text mass-address formats; anyone who wants to pick my brains on the psychology of this game (which is the majority of the problems you'll run into team-wise), feel free to message me on the client or ask me when i'm streaming

A single mistake can easily cost you an L4D game, especially at a high competitive level. LoL is a much deeper and more complex game, but that doesn't undermine the importance of consistently excellent play in other games. And yet, I'm still on excellent terms (and occasionally still play) with my old L4D mates, years after we played with and against some of the best L4D players/teams out there.

I'm not super interested in which game is more likely to cause issues in which ways, but if you think that chemistry and interpersonal skills aren't equally important, you're kidding yourself.
