MS and I have talked about the nature of the so-far revealed scum PRs. We're pretty much on the same page that RM had a really powerful ability that could've won scum the game if she wasn't ever lynched. The way it read when Bork gave the info/flip, it seems like she could give people passive abilities. So, for instance, bulletproof. Or Loved. I think that she likely had a pool of abilities pre-determined that she could hand out, kind of like mad scientist (i think that's the role that does that, right?) and MS thinks she could just choose any passive ability and slap it on someone every night phase.

1) We don't know how strong RM's "gifts" would have been. They might have all been fairly weak (1-day voteless, etc).

2) "I'd rather try to manage exactly the order in which we lynch a scumteam instead of just lynching scum."

~Northern Aveh territory

Sigurd did, in fact, get his tea.

Upon arrival, he’d planned to at least pretend to Bart that he’d been put off by the latter’s excessive showmanship, but Bart’s demeanor was infectious and the two, with Seraphita along for the ride, had soon ended up in the galley with Maison expertly attending to all three.

“What’s the situation in Aveh proper?,” Sigurd had asked when they arrived.

Bart idly scratched his brow. “I wish we could even say we knew it was bad,” he reported. “But the city’s on lockdown, and our agents are trained to kinda know to get out while the getting’s still good.

“Situation’s also worse in Kislev,” he continued. “We’ve picked up a few refugees who were lucky enough to get out of the city, but Solaris has their government in almost as bad a shape as Aveh.” Bart frowned. “Nisan itself is insulated from all that, but…”

“But?” Sigurd probed.

Bart shrugged, his smile faltering. “The war’s about to become two-fronted,” he said. “If they know they can’t attack Nisan directly, what’s to stop them from cutting off our lines of supply from both ends of the continent? We have to pick one or the other -- Aveh or Kislev -- and make our stand there.”

“They had us training for air strike support,” Seraphita offered, speaking, Sigurd knew, to her time in the Elements before the project had been cut. “That seems kinda overkill for the boonie desert towns.”

She was silent for a moment before realizing Bart was staring at her. “No offense,” she amended.

Sigurd could never tell when Bart was about to let something roll off his back versus making an issue of it, but the young master kept his poise.

“You’re actually right,” Bart said with a nod, somehow refraining from commenting on the disparagement against the kingdom of Aveh. “We’ve determined they’re hitting Kislev.”

Sigurd knew where this was going. “And we’re to attack Aveh concurrently?”

Bart’s eyes visibly hardened. He’d been down this road too, Sigurd knew. “That was my initial idea, too. However, some of the Kislev-born in the Alliance reacted strongly to the notion that we’d--”
The sound of metal grinding against metal suddenly permeated every bulkhead surrounding them. Sigurd, Bart, and Seraphita were immediately on their feet. Maison too was looking to Bart for guidance.

“Can you check the exterior? I’ll head to the bridge.”

Sigurd nodded. “You’re with me,” he said to Seraphita, and for once she didn’t seem to have anything to say.

Since they were still surfaced, and in this terrain they had to be, Sigurd would be able to immediately use the elevator to get to the dorsal hatch that would allow them to see what they’d apparently hit. The two of them reached the elevator and rode it in silence, and Sigurd could feel the ship grind to a halt, its engines cutting.

When the elevator stopped, Sigurd wasted no time climbing the ladder and throwing the hatch open with all his might. The sun and wind immediately assaulted him, and he was forced to cover his face with his hands.

On second attempt, Sigurd could barely make out a red blob that had positioned himself in front of their attempted trajectory. Blinking a few times, he could identify it as a gear, not more than twenty meters away.

The bright red gear, for whatever reason, sent chills down his spine. Spikes protruded from every part of its back, and it glowed with an eerie light that made him want to get Bart on the command tell him to throw the Yggdrasil in full reverse.

The cockpit opened, and Sigurd saw a man that looked to be the physical manifestation of the gear itself. Wild, unkempt red hair and a red ensemble that had the appearance of having just bathed in blood.

Upon seeing Sigurd’s apprehension, the man smiled. “Interesting toy,” remarked the stranger in a quiet, pent-up voice. “But I wonder if it’ll be enough.”

“What do you want?” Sigurd requested.

The other man affixed him with an unblinking gaze. “Why, just a little diversion,” he put his hand to his chin. “I’ll tell you what, I’ll give you three. Three of your strongest gears. Thirty minutes.”

The smile never left his face. Sigurd had no doubt he’d be seeing it in his dreams. “If you’re lucky, I might let everyone else live when we’re done.”

The old man didn’t even pilot his own gear.

That’s what he’d said, anyway, right before Seraphita had broke into a run toward the dock. If Sigurd couldn’t keep up with her, then she’d have to deal with that idiot outside herself.

She’d resigned herself to going it alone with Grandgrowl, as she watched it descend from the holding clamps to the surface, when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

“You should’ve let me explain,” Sigurd reproached her, accompanied by that pirate, Bart. “Don’t count me out of this fight -- I’ll just have to use one of the stock fighters we’ve got lying around,”

“Um, aren’t those, like, total pieces of junk?” Seraphita asked without tact. They certainly
looked
like junk.

Despite that, Bart laughed. “Damn right! I keep meaning to refit this hunk of junk, but well, we’re kind of in the thick of it.” He shrugged. “Anyway, don’t you worry; Sigurd’ll be fine.”

Instead of insisting that hadn’t been the point -- it had been that he’d slow her down -- Seraphita’s faced slightly reddened when she realized her thoughts
had
wandered to the welfare of her senior. “Yeah, well, maybe let me take point this time,” she offered coolly, hoping that would lead them off the trail.

It worked, and Bart thumped his chest. “Oh no, missy. You’re flying with
me
too. Bragandier can run circles around your little pet tiger here,” he boasted, referring to the intentionally catlike shape of Seraphita’s gear.

Seraphita decided, for once, not to rise to the bait -- the two were literally thick as thieves, this being a “pirate” ship and all -- and instead tapped her foot as she waited for the Grandgrowl to lock into place at ground level.

The three of them mounted and prepped, the technicians working for the last twenty or so minutes for an emergency deployment, and Seraphita began to check her instruments. Everything looked good -- in fact, better than she’d seen in some time. “I’ve gotta say, Mr. Pirate Man, your crew certainly don’t skimp on the tuneups.”

The voice crackled in. “Yeah, well, when you’re not afforded an endless assembly line of replacements, you learn to take extra care. You two sad sacks about ready?”

Sigurd answered an affirmative, and Seraphita was about to as well when something buzzed around her left thigh. She frowned.
Her squad communicator?
She’d forgotten she was even still wearing it, but it was generally affixed to her uniform and she hadn’t bothered to officially adorn the colors of the Alliance after she’d been sacked by Gebler.
Who could possibly have this frequency except…

She brought it up to her ear. “I’m here,” Seraphita whispered.

“Seraphita.” A rather emotionless voice responded. Yet that plain, unremarkable voice sent Seraphita’s spirits through the roof.

“Tolone?! You’re alive?”

“...Yes. I’ve been reactivated by Nisan, after I was…” Tolone didn’t finish that sentence and Seraphita didn’t want her to.

Tolone hadn’t been given the same courtesy that Seraphita herself had when the Elements had been broken up. Seraphita had woken up one day to find Tolone’s bunk empty, the linens stripped and her belongings missing.

She’d been furious, and immediately gone to the commander. Unfortunately, the commander hadn’t been present, off on yet another boring diplomatic mission of the sort that Seraphita was glad she rarely had to attend herself.

And instead, she’d found herself face to face with Miang.

Miang had a friendly enough demeanor. On the surface, she seemed like the voice of reason in the chain of command, especially considering all the other hotheads around, Seraphita herself a shining example. But it didn’t take the senses of a hawk to know when she was dealing with a snake. Seraphita had been around Miang long enough, and heard enough from others to know the woman was slippery, sadistic, and had her own plans.

Having had the operation that had replaced her dying brain with an artificial one, Seraphita knew that Solaris considered Tolone their property.

And when Seraphita had asked Miang where Tolone was, she’d received one word in response.

“Processing,” Miang had said, the corner of her mouth curving upward slightly.

...

“Oh, Tolone,” was all Seraphita could say.

“...Hello? Officer Prima-Donna?” came Bart’s annoyed voice. She didn’t even realize she’d tuned it out.

“...I’m here; I’m ready.” Seraphita said into the gear’s comm, now slightly dazed, and returned to her personal communicator. “Where are you?” she then whispered sharply to Tolone. “We’re dealing with some madman outside who thinks he can take on 3 gears and a submarine.”
“...I am inbound. ETA 15 minutes. Seraphita -- “ Tolone’s normally monotone voice seemed to take on a bit of color. “--be careful. What you’ve described does not sit well with me.”

Seraphita frowned. It wasn’t like Tolone to give credence to such statement, unsupported by reason.

“I will.”

--------

When the three of them emerged from the Yggdrasil’s hatch, the cockpit again was closed on the mysterious man’s gear, which began to levitate off the ground upon seeing them.

“Good,” the man in red greeted them, and the waves of ether surrounding the gear pulsated and rippled. “Let’s see if you’re as powerful as you are punctual!”
