And for far, far too many of the posts, the main thought that went through my head was "wow okay that's quite a townie thing to do"; he was playing devil's advocate to a necessary degree, pointing out problems, pointing out good things, etc etc. He was often interacting with others in a way that drew attention to himself in a way scum wouldn't like.

I guess my view of him was tainted by the only thing that drew my attention whilst playing (shouting for a wagon on me but not actually voting on it).

Here's as far as I got before I starting going through so many posts that I thought "this is quite town" about that I knew what my conclusion was going to be

Had to go back and read it, that was a reaction to 186 (complaining nothing's happening while not making something happen) and 188 (you weren't voting someone).

(warning: Theory discussion ho!) This is gonna sound weird but SORT OF yeah. You want to wagon the really scummy ones because the wagons themselves provide valuable intel. You want to shoot people who you're finding null and/or useless (see Nexus). You're hoping you hit a bad guy with that bullet but worst case you're making endgame easier by culling the chaff.
