Dawn of a New Day


One last chance. One last try. You bring Seraphim and his strange mask to the gallows to hang.

Except... he raises his sword as you come to lynch him. Uh-oh. He's not going to come quietly.

SWING! The first strike misses Sajin, who retaliates at her corrupted fiance with a rock.

But... there isn't a second swing, as Pesco47 uses the opportunity to relieve Seraphim with his Mask using Zora powers. Then, just to be sure, he uses his spear to stab Seraphim squarely in the back.

As Seraphim dies, Pesco47 and Sajin eye each other warily. Could either of them be corrupted?

And it becomes clear that the answer is... no. They're both clear.

There's only one thing left to be done, eh?

Pesco47 grabs the golden sword that the strange, green-shirted outsider left behind... and stabs the Fierce Deity's Mask squarely in the middle of its face.

And... as the sword rips through the makings of that Mask, a great gash appears in the face of the Moon, mirroring the damage that the Mask controlling it had taken.

As the Fierce Deity's Mask falls apart, its destruction is mirrored in the Moon above. Every crack a rift. Every fragment a falling star falling from the Moon above...

As the last parts of the Fierce Deity's Mask crumble into ruin, the Moon far overhead succumbs to its damage, shattering itself into a million fragments and a bright rainbow.

Pesco47 (the last of the Clock Town Guards) and Sajin (Anju, Kafei's fiance) survey the destruction... but there is one last twist that they could not foresee.

As they watch, the dead bodies of the fallen are encased in glowing blue crystals that float in the air. There is a blinding flash of light...

And the fallen of Termina are restored, as they once were, uncorrupted by the power of the two Masks that tried to restore this world. For most, it is a time of rejoicing, as their efforts to save the world have not been in vain. For a few, however, it is bittersweet... they almost feel pity that they failed to do the duty that Majora's Mask had asked of them upon their corruption. And for one green-shirted outsider... he is grateful. He would have worked to help you, had he had control over his actions. At least he can enjoy the fruits of your labor, even if he wasn't able to help you.

But it's not just the handful that stood against the darkness in this square! All the missing people have come back... the Indigo-Gos, Honey and Darling, the Mayor and his wife, and all the other people that had vanished before this last confrontation started.

As you begin to work on making sure that the Festival of Time will go smoothly, some of you reflect that it will soon be the dawn of a new day. Time to make the most of it.

Well done, Sajin. I wanted to warn you that if the last scum underwent a mask removal, they could pick up my Romani Mask and clinch the game there, but I couldn't quite say it privately.

Because Pesco didn't remove his own mask, I deduced he was Town. But I completely forgot Seraphim picked up the Fierce Deity's Mask, and I don't think I would have deduced that endgame decision. Well done.

Very interested in the mod commentary for this game. The Town was perfectly content to implode on itself until Sironigous got modkilled (and the momentum completely reversed with DGb's vig).

Setup:


Balancing Notes (from early balancing, left for your enjoyment):


- Balancing this is going to be tricky, mainly because of the masks in general and the Fierce Diety's Mask in particular. The Fierce Diety's Mask (determines who the SK will be) is probably my favorite mask in the setup (though the Great Fairy's Mask and Postman's Hat are close), but does leave the problem that I can't be sure what the exact faction count will be at game start (9-4-1-1, 10-3-1-1, and 10-4-1 are all possible). I've tried to limit kills by guiding the Fierce Diety's Mask towards Link, but I can't guarantee this will work completely.
- Choosing the correct number of players will also be difficult. The main problem is that having too few players throws numbers off, while having too many players makes it too easy for the "any player who is not wearing a mask dies" rule to kick in. I think 17 or 18 masks worn at game start is probably correct, in which case I need to add one or two more vanilla townies (probably vanilla Clock Town Guards, but Honey, Darling, the Curiosity Shop owner, and a few others are possibilities. Alternately, I may need to switch a Mafioso to vanilla Town (probably the Goon)
- Fierce Diety's Mask, despite how much I like the idea, isn't helping with concerns about the "players not wearing masks die" rule. My current read is that I need 3-4 roles that can destroy/disable masks to prevent the SK from being unstoppable, but I'm not sure about that.
- I've also considered making the Mafia Mask Thief Sakon, for flavor reasons (if so, he gets Clock Town Guard and something else as a safeclaim).
- The other thing I'm not sure about is implementation of the main mechanics. The exact length of the game deadline and exactly how Mask Drafts should work after Day 0 are still bothering me somewhat.
- SK is astoundingly swingy and a bit of a nightmare to balance (I'm still mulling over exactly how that mask should work if worn by a Mafioso - allowing it to kill in addition to the Mafia kill is more flavorful but offers severe shenanigans... which is somewhat mitigated by the separate win condition, but I'm not sure how well "knows the entire Mafia and needs the Mafia dead" is going to be contained by the rule against scumbuddy claims alone... I might have to change that so it becomes a Mafia Usurper [wins if Mafia wins and he is the last Mafioso] if worn by a Mafioso, almost certainly coupled with a restriction on the SK kill if a Mafioso becomes SK... or else add a post restriction that he may not indicate in any way that he knows the identities of the Mafia, punishable by modkill...). It's also so damn cool that I'd like to keep it if at all possible.

Notes on nomenclature:
- A mask's true wearer is the player which has that mask as their True Mask.
- Day and Twilight are a bit of a misnomer; Day is the period between lynches, and Twilight is the 24-hour period during which tardy abilities are submitted and I deal with actions. Actions currently resolve at end of twilight unless they are Rapid Actions (equivalent to Day abilities in normal games). I'm considering just splitting the game into action frames determined by when lynches occur and making it truly nightless (once a player is lynched, actions can no longer be submitted).
- Town color is

Rules:


<0> I am the Mod thy God. If a dispute arises, my decision is final. That said, I am not infallible - if I make a mistake or you have a question, please inform me of the problem (preferably via PM or bold text) and I will correct it.
<1> This is a game. I hope that you have fun. In return, I ask that you not have your fun at the expense of the other players in this game (in other words, don't be a jackass). Repeated or extreme violations of this rule will result in replacement or modkill.
<1a> Attempting to use loopholes in the rules to gain an advantage in the game is considered jackassery, and will be treated as such. This applies to things like encrypted codes, invisible text, editing and deleting posts, trying to use the structure of the role PM to gain an advantage, etc. Please, use your common sense!
<2> If there is a conflict between a role and the rules, the role wins.
<3> Claiming that another player is your scumbuddy will result in a modkill.
<4> Quoting private communications (role PM, mason conversations, etc.) or pretending to do the same will result in a modkill. Paraphrasing, however, is not only acceptable but encouraged unless I explicitly say otherwise.
<5> You may not talk with other people about this game outside of the thread (but see Rule 2).
<6> This game will have both a vote count and a FoS (Finger of Suspicion) count. All players will have 1 vote and an unlimited number of FoS'es (but see Rule 2).
<6a> In a Normal game, the FoS count will have no effect on the game other than breaking voting ties at deadline. Theme games make no such guarantee.
<7> To help the game run smoothly, votes and FoS'es should be made in bold text, and use the format Vote: XXXX and FoS: XXXX, respectively. An unvote and/or unFoS is required to remove a vote or FoS; to unvote or unFoS, please use the format Unvote: XXXX or UnFoS: XXXX.
<8> If a player has a majority of votes, that player is lynched and cannot be unvoted. You may talk during twilight unless I state otherwise.
<9>
Each game day will begin with a negotiable deadline of 2 weeks in place. At the end of each week, if I find the activity level in the game acceptable and the week does not end with the deadline, then I will extend the deadline by one week, to a maximum of twice the original deadline (a maximum of 4 weeks); the maximum deadlines are not retractable.
(See Game-Specific Rules for deadline details.)
<10> If deadline occurs without a full majority and a majority of voting players are voting for a player, that player will be lynched. Otherwise, No Lynch will occur.
<11> You may elect to No Lynch any number of times during the course of the game. In order to No Lynch, one of the two following conditions must be met: either a majority of living players must vote no lynch, or no player receives a majority of votes before deadline. (To vote No Lynch, please use the format Vote: No Lynch. FoS'es for No Lynch will not be counted.)
<12> Don't drink and post, lest ye receive Public Humilitation. (This rule is an injoke and doesn't actually do anything.)
<13> This is a Nightless setup, therefore there are no nights in this game. All abilities must be submitted during the game day and will resolve at the end of day unless otherwise stated.
<13a> A game "day" (game period) is the time between two consecutive lynches (so if you lynch a player, then lynch another player three real life days later, that game day lasts three real-life days).
"Twilight" lasts from the time the hammer vote is cast for a lynch to the time I next see the thread, and no longer. I will not accept actions after the end of "Twilight".

<14> When you die, stop posting. You may make a single "Bah!"/"Frak you!"/etc. post in the thread. You may not include game content in this post. In addition, once you are dead, please do not discuss the game with anyone other than the Mod until the game is over, as this makes the mod's life easier.
<15> All players need to post at least once every 72 hours, or inform me if this is not possible. If you do not post for 72 hours, you will be prodded. If you are prodded, then you will need to post something (a simple "/prodded" will suffice if you're short on time) within 72 hours or you will be replaced. You will receive an Official Warning the second time you fail to post for more than 72 hours. The third time you fail to post for 72 hours, you will be replaced.
<15a> If you have limited access, you need to post to this effect, either in V/LA or in the thread. If I prod you despite you declaring V/LA status, call me on it and I will be duly embarrassed.
<15b> If you post before I get around to handing out the prod, you avoid the prod.
<16> Players may only use one special ability per day (but see Rule 2). Passive abilities and factional abilities are not counted as special abilities for purposes of this rule.
<17> This game will start on Day 0 after all players have confirmed (by the method specified in their role PM). Day 0 is a no-lynch day. See Mask Rules for details.
<18> Any player who is modkilled automatically loses the game. I will modkill in the fashion that I deem most damaging to the modkilled player's faction.

Game-Specific Rules:


Deadline Rules:

<21> In order to simulate the day mechanic, there are no day deadlines in this game. Instead, there is a game deadline of 144 days (72 hours in the game, where 1 game-hour equals 2 real-life days). At the end of this time, the game will end with a Mafia victory, regardless of the game state.
<22> A countdown to the game deadline, accurate to the nearest game half-hour, will be provided in each vote count.
<23> All twilights will last 1/2 game hours (1 real-life day).
<24> Time spent in Mask Drafts (see Rules 30 and 31) does NOT count towards the game deadline.
<24a> I reserve the right to revoke Rule 24 if I believe that it is being abused. (Hint: repeatedly or excessively trying to prolong Mask Drafts to gain discussion time for the main game will get Rule 24 revoked, though I will be more lenient about this Day 0)

Mask Rules:


<25> This game includes a grand total of 25 masks, corresponding to the masks seen in
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
. Each mask grants a different power (or lack thereof) when worn and begins the game in the unworn mask pool.
<26> Players MAY NOT remove their masks unless an ability says otherwise.
<27> If a player is not wearing a mask (either because they were allowed to drop their mask by an ability or because their mask was knocked off), that player MUST immediately pick up and wear an unworn mask if possible. If more than one player is not wearing a mask at the same time, see Rule 29 and 32.
<28> If a player, for any reason, cannot pick up a mask, that player dies as a state-based effect. (There are no Rapid Actions in this game that can knock off a player's mask.)
<29> When a player is killed (by lynch or killing action), that player's mask will be returned to the unworn mask pool. If a mask is killed, that mask will be removed from the game.
<30> At the beginning of the game (Day 0), a Mask Draft will occur. A chosen player (either chosen randomly or by ability) will choose a mask from the unworn mask pool and put it on (gaining that mask's abilities and removing that mask from the unworn masks pool), then that player will choose another player. This process will repeat, in popcorn style, until all players are wearing masks or until all masks are worn, whichever comes first; when this happens, Day 0 will end and Twilight 0 (a normal twilight) will begin.
<31> If a player must wear two or more masks for any reason, that player chooses and puts on that many masks at the same time.
<32> At the beginning of each day, if one or more players is alive but not wearing a mask and there is at least one unworn mask in play, a Mask Draft will occur. This mask draft will only involve living players that are not currently wearing a mask, but is otherwise identical to the Mask Draft that occurs on Day 0.
<33> Each player may use up to one activated ability granted by their Mask and one activated ability granted by their role per day.

This is a Rapid Action - Special; it resolves immediately upon receipt.

Remember, you can use one of your mask's activated abilities and one of your role's activated abilities each day.

True Mask:
You have no true mask.

Win Condition (Town):
You win when all other factions have left the game, or nothing can prevent the same.

The Skull Kid has no role in the game itself. He exists to give a flavor justification* for the Ocarina of Time being absent from this game (the Ocarina of Time's loss will be mod-confirmed in the opening post) and to show an example of a town role PM.

All normal actions are submitted during day (or twilight if it is retained) and resolve at end of twilight (or day if twilight is dropped). Abilities are added onto an ability stack in blocks in the order shown above. Abilities in the same block resolve simultaneously (so roleblockers can't block other roleblockers and redirectors can't be redirected, among other things) in last in, first out order (so global roleblocks, if they were in the game, would resolve first, and special actions resolve last).

Rapid Actions, unlike normal actions, resolve immediately upon receipt. If their effects conflict, use dependency (if one ability's function depends on the second, the second ability has priority - see: protections preventing kills) and then timestamp order (newer has higher priority).

Triggered abilities are put onto the stack at Rapid Action speed when their trigger condition is met (a lynch-triggered ability would resolve immediately after lynch, before normal actions; similarly, bulletproof abilities check immediately before kills resolve to see if a kill would kill the bulletproof and, if yes, prevent one or more kills).

Continuous abilities are active at all times and do not use the stack.

It seems like the random mask-swapping fun from the Keaton Mask and Romani got left out, but otherwise I think this setup covered almost all of the angles it could have. 'Pleased to see it was a success.
