Test 1, fight 3 -- jeep vs. thorred

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Mon Jul 19, 2004 10:19 am

Nithrar leave the The Cats's Bar and steps out into the courtyard. The cool evening breeze is a welcome change to the crowded atmosphere of the tavern. He notices a few battered and quite bloody bodies on the ground, a fight has been going on here.

Sorry it took a long time coming, and please excuse any bad grammar.

Nithrar stops dead in his tracks with the uneasy feeling that something is amiss. He pulls his Da'Tashi sticks out of their carrying case on his back and mutters to himself. "An ounce of prevention..."

Most people wouldn't describe Nithrar as forbidding, but with him standing there holding the two 36" sticks used in the Elvish Martial Art of Da'Tashi, almost anyone would give him wide berth.
Da'Tashi is very similar to Escrima or Kali, for those who know of such things

He scans the street looking for anything unusual.

If, after the scene is set, this is not appropriate, feel free to delete it ;)

Instead of jeep's last line:

He turns to leave when a dwarf, about 5'2" dressed in brown leather and wielding a large mace, appears in front of him, barring his way.
"And where do you think you're going, stranger?" He glares at Nithrar menacingy.
"Leave him be, Raydan, there's been enough fighting tonight," another dwarf calls from the edge of the courtyard. A crowd is forming.
"Not until I've spilt some blood," answers Raydan.

Damage? Or is that only assessed after the round?

Nithrar silently cursed himself for looking at the first dwarf as he used hit left hand to pick up the mace strike coming for his head. He was able to redirect it so it was just a glancing blow instead of the crushing blow that threatened to remove his brain from his skull. He followed up with a quick one-two strike with the sticks.

Two sticks, two attacks.

I've been assessing damage as it happens. That's why Oduro had that Willpower check in the middle of the last round of fight 1, and didn't get a final attempt at an attack off. If damage were assessed at the end of a round, that attempt would have happened, as well as the entire next round if the Willpower check were successful.

2 damage.
with Raydan's attack.

Nithrar attack one:
Nithrar = 15
Raydan = 6
Critical bludgeoning hit!
3 damage

Nithrar attack two:
Nithrar = 14
Raydan = 12
Attack successful.
2 damage

The sticks would be in the medium category?

I would consider them medium bludgeoning weapons, yes.

Nithrar rotated and settled into the first strike (with his right hand) and landed a solid strike to dwarf's head. Immediately, Nithrar's left hand traced up the dwarf's arm and the thunk of the stick hitting his forehead was heard across the street.

The dwarf was tough, though. He spun with a wild slash that came closer to Nithrar than he would have liked- a quick pass-through cleared the strike. Taking advantage of the opening he struck again.

Second verse, same as the first. Two more strikes with the sticks, please.[/OCC]

Nithrar struck with a backhand slash with his left, but the Dwarf ducked under it. Nithrar then adjusted the path the right slash was following and connected solidly. The dwarf stumbled back and the two sqared off again.

"Is that enough Dwarf? It looks like there was plenty of blood spilled today. I won't let you spill any more of mine."

Nope. Disarm requires critical, not just success. That is a hit, just not hard or precise enough to disarm.

The Dwarf took a deep breath, but was apparently distracted by the lump forming on his head. The dwarf charged and tried to destroy Nithrar's right arm with a back handed blow. Nithrar attempted to pass it and step in, but got a little ahead of himself and took the blow on his chest. Nithrar, cursing, finished passing the strike and launched his counter. Nithrar considered using a bit of magic to trip the dwarf up, but discounted the thought immediately. Instead, he decided to force the Dwarf into submission using more mundane tactics.

Seeing as how my char will not go for the killing blows in this situation, I would propose that no HP remaining will indicate a knock-out. Also, there must be a penalty for attempting a disarm, otherwise, why not try every turn. I would suggest no or half damage if unsuccessful. I'll assume no penalty for this fight...

Nithrar decides it's time to Defang the Snake.

Two strikes to the arm please

Nithrar stuck down towards the Dwarf's writst with his left and a strike to the forearm with the right was immediately behind. The strike to the wrist missed completely and the second wasn't nearly enough to loose the mace.

The dwarf rode the motion of the strike to the arm down and looped his arm overhead and landed a crushing blow to nithrar's shoulder. "I'm going to be stiff for a month!" thought Nithrar.
what are the units of time?

Nithrar uncoiled with a flurry of attacks.

Two strikes please.

In AD&D there is a concept of a "natural hit" and a "natural miss". That is if you roll a 20 it's an automatic hit and a 1 is an automatic miss. With d10 it might be too frequent, but maybe we could incorporate something along those lines.

We aren't inventing new units of time. Still seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, etc. Dourgrim was going to make up a calendar with invented month names, and there may be a different number of hours per day, days per month, and months per year, but the units themselves won't change.

There's no penalty to disarm at the moment, but that's a topic for post-test discussion.

It's clear that under the current rules Evasion is a required sill for anyone who might get into a fight. I suspect that Willpower will also be required.

That is going to limit the diversity of the characters, I think.

However, it looks like Nithrar should usually win the fight, since he has greater skill in evasion and greater weapon skill and the HP difference is only 1. If Yaw doesn't beat me to it, I'll run the numbers.

OK quickly running the numbers:

Nithrar hit:

w/ at least one stick: 85%
Critical with at least one stick: 25%

w/both sticks: 72%
Critical with both sticks: 6%

Raydan hit:
45%
Raydan critical hit: 0

Full numbers...which disagree somewhat with Jeep's. Anyway...

Reaction Check:

Nithrar initiative: 50%
Raydan initiative: 50%

Nithrar Attacks:
Probability of hitting with a Da'Tashi stick: 79%
Probability of critical in this case: 12%

Probability of hitting with both sticks: 62.4%
Probability of critical in this case: 1.4%

Probability of hitting in a round: 95.6% :shock:
Probability of critical in this case: 22.6%

Since Nithrar never tried a Focus check, and has a Focus skill of 0, I'm not including it.

Raydan Attacks:
Probability of mace hit: 36%
Probability of mace hit if Focus check successful: 45%
Probability of Focus check success: 50%
Probability of hit and Focus check success: 22.5%

Raydan cannot critical hit Nithrar.
