New Hosting

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri Jul 29, 2005 5:27 am

Post by mith »

I've just signed up for new hosting. In the next week or so, we'll be transfering everything over, and when everything is working, we'll lock the boards on this server. If you happen to come on while the DNS is in the process of updating, we'll leave a link you can access the new server from.

jeep, get on AIM when you have time. :)

No, everything will be transfered over. There may be a small period where the forums are locked while that's happening (so we don't miss anything).

AIM tonight and tomorrow. I have a backup, but just in case you should take one too.

Basic process to follow:
  1. Install forum on new server - done
  2. Merge in latest updates to 2.0.17 - done
  3. Test (make sure we have PEAR libraries installed, etc)
  4. Lock forum and change editor p/w on wiki
  5. Make a post as an administrator
  6. Backup forum. I think we should generate SQL statements instead of just backing up the database (This takes about an hour.)
  7. Restore forum on new site by running the SQL (another hour)
  8. Test forum (ensure the post after we locked it is there.)
  9. Post link to new server, by IP address, as a global announcement
  10. Switch DNS
  11. Ceeelll- e - brate good times, woo hoo.
  12. Move archive forum
  13. Move wiki
  14. Move other stuff (main page going to go directly to wiki?) - in progress
  15. Fix broken links, if any

Birthday dinner, but I should be on tonight after that. And any time tomorrow.

Currently downloading the "other stuff" (everything but the databases) so I can work on reorganizing and deleting a few things. Will backup the main database after that.

Oh, happy day! :D

Major thanks to the boys doing all the dirty work so that the rest of us can keep on lynching and nightkilling eachother.

BTW, mith, check out V/LA. I won't be ready this week end.

Also, someone should add V/LA to the abbreviations on the wiki.

Brilliant news, BUT will you be moving your DNS to a new host? as the DNS has been the cause of most of the problems for the NZers at least, and i suspect many more.

Interesting statistics:
71% of the database space is taken up by the wordmatch data that is used for the search engine.
20% by posts.
6% by PMs and notes
The rest for stuff to keep the site running like users, smilies, forum names, etc.

71% for search indices? Good lord.... is there any way to streamline that?

Not without overhauling the search feature.
