Mini 318 - Simon Mafia! Over!

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Apr 23, 2006 7:20 am

Post by Vaughn »

Welcome to the First Annual National Simon Championship Tournament! Players gathered from around the world will compete for the grand prize, a million dollars, as well as the recognition as the best Simon player in the world!

However, yesterday morning, a threatening letter was left at the receptionist's desk, warning us that we will suffer dire consequences if the tournament isn't immediately canceled. We treated it as a practical joke until this morning our receptionist did not come in for work. We called but received no response. When I sent my assistant to check on her, we were shocked to find her murdered in her household with a letter left on her then-lifeless body.

"We of the Anti-Simon Society have infiltrated your tournament, this is your last warning".

For this to become an annual event, we cannot cancel. You are forewarned of the situation, and we accept no liability for your lives.

However, we cannot start the tournament until we've apprehended the ones who murdered our receptionist. Luckily for you, the tournament doesn't start for another two weeks. I, the coordinator of the tournament beleive in social justice, so I leave it up to you to find and arrest the culprits, via Mafia-style.

For the tournament, we've decorated the hotel with a Simon-theme in mind. You will receive a keycard with your room colour and #. After the voting portion of each day, you will all return to your rooms until we start the next day.

To assist you, I will be locking all the doors of an entire floor each night, Players and staff on that floor will not be allowed to leave their rooms that night, but that also means no one will be able to get in.

You have
10
days until the start of the tournament, good luck.

The Rules:
Quoted From Tamuz, Edited slightly

Please read the rules. Failure to adhere to the rules will result in a Modkill under my discretion.

[01] Have fun and don't be a jerk. Please have consideration for the other players and the mod, and actually PLAY the game by posting and voting.
[02] No communication outside the thread unless your role allows you to do so and then only in the game's nights.
[03] Get your choices in before the deadlines. If not, there will be no choice for that night.
[04] No quoting my or others emails/PMs. You may reveal your role name and your role type, but the rest must be paraphrased.
[05] If you're dead, YOU'RE DEAD. No more posting
[Period]

[06] Lynching will be carried out once a regular majority is reached. If a deadline is reached, the day will end in No Lynch. Votes of No Lynch will be accepted
[07] Only votes in BOLD will be counted. Please clearly unvote if you want to change your vote.
[08] Do NOT edit or delete your posts! If you made a coding error, just post again.
[09] Do NOT post in invisible text.
[10] It is risky to lynch someone based on errors in their role/role name. I am fallible.
[11] The mod is always right. Accept the decisions, and if you want to discuss them, take it to PM’s, or do so after the game has finished.
[12] You can talk during twilight. I'll try to get vote counts up and lynch scenes quickly, but until I do, feel free to continue talking.
[13] Please try to post at least once per day. If you are going to be gone for more than 48 hours, tell us in the thread.

Gameplay Mechanic:
I will announce which floor will be locked out at the start of each day. For the following night, players on that floor will be unable to enter or leave their rooms, effectively nullifying any night abilities they may have. However, this also means that if they are the target of any abilities it will also be nullifed. Further questions should be PMed to me.

We will be starting with day, but consider this "dawn", so you may talk amongts yourselves if you've been granted the ability

I've been thinkin about this floors setup and I think it would be interesting to discuss the pros and cons of announcing which floors we're on.

Cons:
Scum can 100% target someone not locked out each night. (Without reveal they have a 70-80% chance of hitting someone who's not locked out)

Pros:
Once there's only one killer, it becomes easier to narrow them down based on what floor is locked out and whether or not anyone dies that night.
A doctor or cop would be able to target someone with 0% chance of getting locked out. (70-80% chance of success if there's no reveal.)

I haven't thought this all the way through yet, but if we learn the floor/room of each person right now it benefits the killers slightly more than town but if we learn it after we nail one scum, it may be a pro-town move to claim floors. That's assuming there are just two scum.

Any thoughts on this?

That's what I figured, but it's worth making sure we don't glaze over a claimed guilty result.

Interesting... I think it's more important to risk both mafiosos not killing and power roles not targetting. Means that the town as a whole decides the majority of kills, which is good.

Would scum be stopped from lying about their floor? Is it safe to assume there will be an equal number of people on each floor? If so, are floors and rooms revealed upon death?

...h'm.

I think there have to be three people per floor to keep it interesting, otherwise someone would get singled out very easily after a kill makes them the only surviving resident of a two-man floor. I don't think scum could lie about their room/floor assignments because we would catch them. They could trade room assignments with each other but may have missed the opportunity to exchange that info, and would get caught if a doctor or cop was unable to investigate them due to a lockout.

I am pretty sure floor and room will be revealed upon death because it will make the game more interesting than otherwise. If two people are killed and no one knows what floors they were from, night decisions wouldn't be any different than if the game were played without floors. If you know they're both from yellow floor, there are all sorts of interesting tests and logic games you can play surrounding your hypothesis of who the lone remaining member may be.

Thinking like a killer and assuming we all floorclaim, a killer does NOT want to be the last person alive on their floor. This is because in endgame, if a kill doesn't happen despite floorclaims, it's an indication that the killer's floor was probably locked out. A cop does not care how many people are alive on their floor, nor does a doctor. A killer does NOT want to wipe out all people on one floor if at all possible. Just guessing here, but I don't imagine the mod will lock empty floors, meaning that an empty floor will increase the possibility that the killer will get locked out and thereby outed.

Since killers want to ration their killings evenly amongst floors, I suggest we don't floorclaim for now. No need to make their job any easier, and hopefully the first two of us to die will be on the same floor.
Vote: the_holy_thom. What is a "thom?" And why is it holy?
I'm a Thom. Its my name. It annoyed me that Thomas had an "h" and Tom didn't, so I switched it around. And I'm Holy because I created my own religion. It didn't last, mainly because the Catholic Church had already nabbed the rights to Thomism.

I would vote Fritzler because of that scary avatar, but he has a vote so Vote: VitaminR as he had a poor reason to vote me. Asking would have been more poilte.

We can't be sure that there's an even split over the floors. It's probable, but not certain. And I agree that a floorclaim now would likely hurt the town, whereas later it could be useful information to single out the scum.

Could be an interesting endgame if there is only one person left on each floor. We should make a note of who dies, what floor they were on and what floor was locked that night.
Locked
