Rules of Methodical Mafia 2
The Setup
[01] The basic setup is: 3 Mafia and 9 Townies.
[02] The game consists of two phases. First: Day 0, when discussion and voting take place. Second: the subsequent days, during which the game is resolved.
[03] Before the end of Day 0, every player must post, in the thread, a ballot for use in the subsequent days. A ballot consists of a list of every other player (i.e. 11 names) listed from most scummy to least scummy.
[04] Every day starting with Day 1, there will be an election using the ballots posted on Day 0. Whoever "wins" the election will be lynched. The next day there will be a new election using the surviving players' ballots. This will continue, until one faction has won.
Day 0 (discussion and voting)
[05] The deadline for Day 0 will be secret and random, but once everyone has confirmed I will announce the window within which the deadline will fall.
[06] During Day 0, everyone must post a ballot. A ballot must comply with the following rules: (i) it must contain the name of every other player in the game (i.e. 11 names), listed in the order that you would like those players lynched -- with your first choice at the top; (ii) each name must be spelled out correctly in full -- no nicknames or abbreviations -- and capitalisation must be correct; (iii) each name must appear on a new line; (iv) the list must appear in
Code: Select all
tags; (v) there must be no other formatting in the list.
[07] If you do not format your ballot correctly, I will ignore it. If you repeatedly format your ballot incorrectly, I will replace you.
[08] You may re-post a new ballot as often as you like. I will only count the last (correctly formatted) ballot that you post.
Day 1 and following
[09] From Day 1, the game will proceed like a normal Mafia game (except that the thread will remain locked). There will be no nights.
[10] Each day, I will count all ballots according to the system known as Single Transferable Vote or Instant Run-off Voting. The winner of the poll will be lynched.
[11] The next day, I will conduct a new poll among the survivors, ignoring any votes for dead players. This will continue until one side has fulfilled its win condition.
Tiebreaker rules
[12] STV/IRV sometimes requires ties to be resolved. I'll follow the tiebreaker rules below, but it may happen that I need to devise further tiebreaker rules. In that case I will devise an ad hoc rule. I doubt that this will be necessary. (See this post for further details.)
[13] If there is a tie for the candidate with the fewest votes (after I have eliminated all players with no votes), I will eliminate all those with the fewest votes -- UNLESS that would leave just one candidate remaining. In the latter case, I will eliminate the candidate with the fewest votes in the previous round.
[14] If all candidates not eliminated have the same number of votes, I will eliminate the player with the fewest votes in the previous round.
Win Conditions
[15] The Town wins if all the Mafia are lynched.
[16] The Mafia win if (a) all the Townies are lynched; or (b) only 2 players remain alive, one of whom is Mafia.
[17] The game will not end in any other case (including, for example, if there are 2 Mafia and 2 Townies; or even 2 Mafia and 1 Townie). Even the Mafia in this village are methodical.
Role PMs
[18]The Role PMs look like this:
Role: Townie
Please read the Rules very carefully and then confirm in the thread.

Role: Mafia.
The Mafia in this game are: XXX, XXX, XXX. You may talk to each other outside the thread from now until the end of Day 0.
Please read the Rules very carefully and then confirm in the thread.
General Rules
[19] The game is not to be discussed outside the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so. The Mafia may talk throughout Day 0.
[20] You may not use
tags except for posting your ballot.
[21] No small text or any other form of hidden/obscured text. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.
[22] If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate -– don’t leave us hanging.
[23] Unlike other mods I am fallible. Please point out any mistakes I make gently. In particular, if I post a summary of ballots that does not accurately reflect your ballot, it is your responsibility to correct me. If you don’t your ballot may be treated as it appears in the summary.
[24] If you have any questions at all, please PM me or post the question in the thread.
[25] Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players and your mod. I have zero tolerance for abusive posts.
[26] The experimental nature of this game may require me to change the rules as we go along. I'll only do this if necessary and with fair warning.
