Object of the game: Bid on auctions with Rocks, Scissors, and Papers. Win enough of them to make it to the Final for a best-of-five match!

Bid as many as you want - and can afford - but don't bid different types at once.
Ten auctions total. You'll get some Rocks, Papers, and Scissors at the start of the first and sixth auctions, as well as the Final. There'll be some randomness here, but you're guaranteed to get at least some of each. Any you don't spend can be used in the Final - if you make it there.
If an auction has bids for all three types, the smallest bids get axed and lose. Repeat until there aren't three types any more.
Next: Rock beats Scissors; Scissors beats Paper; Paper beats Rock. Lots of Scissors vs. a single Rock? The Rock still wins.
Finally: more Rocks beat fewer Rocks. Ditto for Paper and Scissors.
If this doesn't result in a clear winner, it's a tie and no one wins. The last group eliminated earns the draw; everyone else loses.

Winner loses their bid and gains the prize.
Ties and losers keep their bids; ties get a small consolation prize. (1 coin.)

Each auction has multiple lots. Bid on only one lot. There'll be one fewer lot than there are players.
Each lot has VPs and coins, rolled randomly.
If a lot gets passed up, I'll add some goodies to it. It'll stick around for the next auction.

VPs control eliminations. In last place when the 5th auction ends? You're out. Not in the top two after the 10th auction? Goodbye.
- If there's a tie, we'll run a special auction with survival as the prize. Don't lose.
- Tie again, we'll run a sudden-death speedrun of ten regular RPS matches to resolve it.
- Tie again? Goodbye.

Coins purchase more Rocks, Papers, and Scissors (3 coins = 1 of your choice) - but only for the Final. Don't make it that far? Then they're worthless.
The lots get more valuable from the 6th auction on - if you're still around to enjoy them.

The Final: top two compete. VPs are reset to zero. Five auctions of one lot each, with the lots being worth 1 VP. Whoever has the most VPs at the end wins. Tied? Sudden-death auctions, with everyone getting one more Rock / Paper / Scissor, just to make sure there can't be a deadlock.

All information is public (coins, VPs, stocks of Rocks / Papers / Scissors.) Turns are submitted via PM.

Deadlines: ~48 hours. No extensions. I plan to wrap this up before US Thanksgiving.

We've got the minimum number of people needed to play, so I'm going to go ahead and start up a timer. Once that timer expires, we'll start up the game.

At the start of the game: each player will receive 15 throws. Guaranteed minimum of three of each type; the remaining ones will be randomly chosen.
At the start of Auction 6: each player still alive will receive another 15 throws, with the same guaranteed minimum.

During Auctions 1-5, assuming 5 players:

1 lot will have 1d4+4 VPs, 1d4 coins.
1 lot will have 1d6+4 VPs, 1d6 coins.
1 lot will have 1d8+4 VPs, 1d8 coins.
1 lot will have 1d6 VPs, 2d6 coins.

The first lots will be rolled at the start of the first auction, and so on and so forth.
Lots that are not claimed will receive +1 VP and +1 coin for each round they remain unclaimed.

During Auctions 6-10, all auction prizes will double in value; the 1d4+4 lot will be removed.

If anyone has strong feelings about balance or the numbers, please make suggestions before the game starts - once the game starts, the numbers will be locked in. If we get more players, I'll add more lots.

Any chance you would reconsider extensions because that really helped me a lot in Splendor?

My goal for this game is to have it wrapped up by US Thanksgiving, which falls on November 24th this year. So that means ending the game no later than November 23rd.

There's a potential for 15 rounds (ten regular auctions plus a best-of-five final). With each round having a 48 hour deadline and a start date of October 19th*, that wraps things up on November 18th.

Problem is, I also have to allow time for elimination tie-breakers. Add two of those and now we're looking at November 22nd. Throw in one 24-hour extension per player and now we're looking at November 26th - which is too late.

I'll be sending players PMs at the start of each round. I'm also happy to send out PMs at the 24-hours-left point (for players who request it and haven't submitted anything yet). But this time around, I can't allow for extensions without potentially compromising the game's overall deadline.

Players may send me conditional moves for a future round if they think they might miss a specific deadline.

Players may also send me a default move as an insurance policy against missing deadlines in general.

Please let me know if anyone would like more details about these.

* - technically, the day before by my time zone. But it'll be late in the evening.

Numbers updated to account for five players. If we get to six, I'll add one more lot and an extra elimination at the end of the fifth auction.

Last chance to sign up! :)

Random draws will be simulated as if they came from a bag. Each player is drawing six from the bag. To allow for some variance, I'm going to put nine throws per player (three of each type) and do up a random draw via random.org to decide who gets what.

1-15: Rock
16-30: Paper
31-45: Scissors

Charles510 gets the first set of six.
Nancy Drew 39 gets the second set of six.
Aisa gets the third set of six.
Not Known 15 gets the fourth set of six.
StrangerCoug gets the fifth set of six.

When it comes time for the second set of draws, we'll do it the same way, except that we'll leave the leftovers from Round 1 in the bag. I'll also put spent bids back into the bag.

Code: Select all

 1 41 20 11 29 19 > Charles510
24 37 27 16 18 7 > Nancy Drew 39
36 28 2 8 26 4 > Aisa
12 39 14 45 33 25 > Not Known 15
22 42 15 5 35 32 > StrangerCoug
 3 21 23 43 44 13 > Back to the Bag
31 17 10 6 34 30 > Back to the Bag
40 38 9 > Back to the Bag

Charles gets: Rock, Scissors, Paper, Rock, Paper, Paper.
Nancy Drew 39 gets: Paper, Scissors, Paper, Paper, Paper, Rock.
Aisa gets: Scissors, Paper, Rock, Rock, Paper, Rock
Not Known 15 gets: Rock, Scissors, Rock, Scissors, Scissors, Paper
StrangerCoug gets: Paper, Scissors, Rock, Rock, Scissors, Scissors.

I bid

Posting some examples of how the auctions are processed in response to some questions.

Spoiler: Sample auctions
Three players: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie.
Two lots: A and B. A's worth 5 VP; B's worth 3 VP.

Example 1:

Alpha bids 2 rocks on lot A.
Bravo bids 1 rock on lot A.
Charlie bids 3 rocks on lot A.

Charlie wins lot A (5 VP). Everyone bid the same type, so the high bid wins.

Example 2:

Alpha bids 2 rocks on lot A.
Bravo bids 1 paper on lot A.
Charlie bids 3 rocks on lot A.

Bravo wins lot A (5 VP). Two types, so RPS resolves - and paper beats rock.

Example 3:

Alpha bids 2 rocks on lot A.
Bravo bids 1 paper on lot A.
Charlie bids 3 scissors on lot A.

Alpha wins lot A (5 VP). Bravo loses due to bidding the lowest; Charlie's scissors then lose to Alpha's rocks.

Example 4:

Alpha bids 2 rocks on lot A.
Bravo bids 1 paper on lot B.
Charlie bids 3 scissors on lot A.

Alpha wins lot A (5 VP); Bravo wins lot B (3 VP). Bravo's bid is uncontested; Alpha vs. Charlie works just like in example 3.
